Decorate your home only with things that spark joy, make your smile, laugh or brings the good memories alive. I personally love resting my eyes on symmetry, harmonious assembles or interesting textures. It can be as simple as flowers fresh from the garden wrapped in morning dew.
I love to come into a home, and see something different, a personal setting mixed by the owner, which gives you an unique feel, sparks your curiosity or make you feel that you are welcomed into your host`s magical world.
Books is one of my favourites for decoration. The cover has an impact on me, either it`s the colour, a picture or the graphic. I change them around in different settings, and layer them up with other items that I like or that means something special to me. Layering is a good way to create interesting combinations , using different textiles, pattern, colours or what ever you have for hand. Thats where my love of textured and worn objects comes in, as I think a clean canvas with a modern or contemporary design needs something genuine that stands out, creates an atmosphere and where the contrasts between new and old, or different textures and colours makes a difference to the space.
I can still remember the impact a “stuffed eagle” had on me in my childhood. Flying high over the staircase, the beautiful bird evoked both fear and fascination every time I visited my best friends house. I loved to hear the story about how the bird ended up there, the earthy colours of the feathers, and maybe more than anything, the crooked beak. By the way, the bird is still there, over the stair case, 40 years on.
Another dear memory, is the admiration every time I visited my auntie, who had a beautiful, very old painting of a little girl holding a doll, and the doll was actually sitting at a table under the painting. The girl was a relative, and the doll were still intact, not for playing though, only display, with the most beautiful dress and a porcelain head.. it was almost like a ritual to look at the painting, and the untouchable doll every time I visited. Mixed with the smell of my auntie`s home baked buns, these is the kind of decoration I´m aiming for, not literally, in terms of a dead bird and a doll, however, I´m sure you got it!
